Buying a Pilates Mat

If you go to a Pilates studio, one of the first things you may note is the presence of a Pilates mat. This is because the Pilates mat is one of the most basic essentials for students of Pilates. While not everyone in a Pilates class actually has their own mat, they usually have to have one available for the duration of the class.

However, even if you can rent a mat in class, it will still be good if you have your own. This way, you will have instant access to a mat when you want to perform the exercises at home. As you progress in your Pilates class, you may feel motivated to practice what you learned right away or augment your learning with the use of an instructional Pilates video.

What it Looks Like

You might think that a Pilates mat and a yoga mat are the same thing. If you already have an old yoga mat at home, you can indeed use it for Pilates. However, mats for Pilates are, in truth, supposed to be thicker than yoga mats. This is because in yoga, the practitioner is encouraged to feel the floor under his feet. This is not necessary in Pilates. In Pilates, a mat should be thicker because some of the exercises may be painful without adequate cushioning. It also differs from a yoga mat in that it is not as sticky. While a lot of yoga exercises require friction, the same is not true with Pilates exercises.

When it comes to specific thickness, a Pilates mat is usually a half-inch thick or more. They come in varying lengths and sizes, so just remember that it should be long enough to accommodate your entire height. It ranges from 56 to 86 inches long. When it comes to width, also ensure that your entire body can be accommodated while lying down, with some allowance for movement.

Because alignment and balance are very important in a Pilates workout, make sure that the mat is not too soft. They are usually made out of foam or rubber.

Portability and Storage

A Pilates mat can usually be rolled up or folded. This makes them easier to carry around and store. Those that you can roll up are usually thicker and firmer. The best type to purchase are the closed cell foam mats because they are easy to roll. That is because they have a vinyl covering and are not too soft.

Those that you can fold are usually much bigger than the ones you can roll. They are also heavier and are usually the kinds you can see in a studio. They also cost a bit more. If you are looking for a mat for personal use, you might be better off with the type you can roll. If you are looking to build your own workout studio, perhaps the kind you can fold will be best.

If you do not have a bag especially made for carrying a mat, you might want to buy one that comes with straps. This will make it easier to carry to class.

Buying a Pilates mat is only the first step when it comes to getting a complete set of gear for your regimen. As you go along, you will want to explore options of purchasing other types of essential equipment, such as exercise balls and reformers.
